The distinction is less about sensor size and more about recording architecture and workflow. RAW Recording & Codec Choices
RAW recording captures unprocessed sensor data — no in-camera sharpening, noise reduction, or color processing applied. This gives your colorist maximum latitude in post: exposure, white balance, color grading, and noise management can all be adjusted aggressively without degrading the image. What lenses work with cinema cameras?
Cinema cameras typically offer PL (Positive Lock) mount as the native cinema lens mount, compatible with Cooke, Zeiss, Leica, and ARRI cine lenses. Many also offer EF, L-mount, or other adapters to use photography lenses. Blackmagic cameras come in various mount options (L-mount, EF, B4) and are highly adaptable. Cine lenses are characterized by hard focus stops, consistent T-stop markings, and consistent front diameter for matte boxes — all features that matter on a professional set.
What is log footage and why does it look flat out of camera?
Log (logarithmic) encoding is a gamma curve that compresses the camera's full dynamic range into a format that recording media can capture. The result looks desaturated and flat because the highlights and shadows are being preserved — they haven't been "baked in" yet. The finishing step — applying a LUT or doing a primary color grade — expands those values back into a contrasty, vibrant image. Shooting log without grading produces unusable-looking footage; shooting log with a proper grade produces the cinematic look you're after.
Can I use cinema camera footage in DaVinci Resolve?
Yes — DaVinci Resolve (free version available) is the industry-standard color grading and post-production tool, and it has native support for BRAW, R3D, and virtually every other cinema camera format. Blackmagic cameras and DaVinci Resolve are built to work together; BRAW metadata carries directly into Resolve's RAW controls with no export/import overhead.
