How to choose an action camera

Action cameras are small, rugged, and built to go where your regular camera can't. Here's what matters when you're picking one.

Stabilization is the headline feature

The single biggest reason action footage looks professional now is electronic stabilization. The current generation holds the horizon level and smooths out hits and vibration so well that a chest- or helmet-mounted shot looks like it was on a gimbal. If you're choosing between models, stabilization performance should weigh more heavily than resolution numbers.

Resolution and frame rate

Most action cameras shoot 4K and many now reach 5.3K, but the more useful question is frame rate. High frame rates (120fps and up) let you slow motion down smoothly — perfect for sports and tricks. For everyday vlogging and travel, 4K at 30 or 60fps is plenty. More resolution also gives you room to crop and reframe in editing.

Waterproofing and mounting

Most action cameras are waterproof to around 10 meters without a housing, with deeper dive cases available. Just as important is the mounting ecosystem — the whole point of an action camera is sticking it on helmets, handlebars, chest harnesses, and poles. Check that the mounts you need are available and that batteries are easy to swap, since recording outdoors drains them quickly.

Battery, heat, and accessories

Action cameras run hot and small batteries empty fast, especially at high resolutions. Plan on spare batteries and fast, high-endurance memory cards rated for sustained 4K recording. A few well-chosen mounts and an extra battery or two turn a single camera into a setup you can actually rely on through a full day.

Frequently asked questions

What's the most important feature in an action camera?

Stabilization. Modern electronic stabilization is what makes mounted, on-the-move footage look smooth and professional, and it has improved more than any other feature in recent years. Weigh it more heavily than headline resolution numbers when you compare models.

Do I need 4K, or is that overkill?

4K is the practical standard and gives you room to crop and reframe in editing. Going higher (5.3K) adds even more flexibility but bigger files. For most people, 4K at 30 or 60fps is the sweet spot — and pay attention to high frame rates if you want smooth slow motion.

Are action cameras waterproof out of the box?

Most are waterproof to roughly 10 meters with no extra housing, which covers swimming, surfing, and rain. For scuba depths you'll want a dedicated dive housing. Always check the specific model's rating before you take it under.

How many batteries and what memory card do I need?

Bring spares — action cameras drain batteries fast, especially at high resolution, and they can get warm on long takes. Use a high-endurance microSD card rated for sustained 4K recording so it can keep up without dropping frames.

Should I buy new or used?

New is usually best for action cameras since batteries and seals wear and waterproofing matters. If you buy used, get it from someone who has tested it and confirmed the seals and battery are sound — our used gear is inspected and tested in the shop, with honest notes on condition and what's included.
