It helps to shield light, making it easier to see the viewfinder. It is designed to be longer, meaning it protrudes further from the back of the camera, than the standard eyecup. This long eye relief places more distance between your nose and the back of the camera for comfort. It also does an even better job of blocking stray light for an improved viewing experience.
